This is a message from one of the elists, with some comments for another of my correspondents.

The New school hosts a new elist called Thinking Out Loud. I like the following which was posted on the "Thinking out Loud" elist today:

Is the idea of 'school' itself something that should be done away with?

Yes, "school" in the sense of:
1) doing something because you are told to,
2) bowing to an authoritarian power,
3) doing something for a futue reward.

Illich in 'Deschooling Society' makes a big point of 'conviviality,'living in joyous collaboration with others. He uses he forced and controlled mode of living for the future as the major illness of school and of society. If you define school differently it does not solve the problem.

I particularly like the first sentence. How wonderful if everyone could live in joyous collaboration with others! I think that's really what I'm passionate about - people living in joyous collaboration with others!!
